The Sydney Roosters have extended their condolences to the Phipps family, following the passing of Life Member and long-time club benefactor, Mr Harry Phipps.
The tradition has now grown into the Jack Gibson Medal Presentation, and over the years Mr Phipps maintained his support for the club he loved so much, donating the Medals named in honour of Jack Gibson (Player of the Year), Arthur Beetson (NYC Player of the Year) and Barry Van Heekeren “MOCCA” (Sydney Roosters Staff Recognition Award).
In the mid-90s, an award was named in his honour – the Harry Phipps Rising Star – recognising an up-and-coming player in the Sydney Roosters ranks. Previous winners include Mitchell Aubusson, Tautau Moga and Dylan Napa.
Sydney Roosters Chairman, Mr Nick Politis, said: “Harry was as passionate a Roosters supporter as they come and a wonderful friend to not only me, but so many involved at the club.
“His loyalty and passion for our proud club will never be forgotten.”
Roosters Chief Operating Officer Football, Mr Brian Canavan, added: “Harry was an immensely popular character with a generous and caring disposition. He touched the hearts of many people at the Roosters and will be sadly missed by all.
“On behalf of everyone at the Club, we extend our heartfelt sympathies to Harry’s wife Kyoung-Sook and children Sam, Jennifer and Kristine.
