The Gold Coast Titans have dented the Sydney Roosters minor premiership hopes with a 30-22 upset win in front of 17,542 fans at Allianz Stadium
The Sydney Roosters were looking to reclaim the top spot on the ladder with a win over the Gold Coast Titans. It was a match that most people expected the Roosters to win easily.
In the early stages this was far from the case with the Titans managing to score in just the second minute through Steve Michaels after the Roosters dropped a bomb in the set prior.
The pressure didn’t ease up on the Roosters with just seven minutes later Beau Falloon dived through from dummy half to score for the visitors to push our their surprise lead to 12-0.
The Roosters then managed to hit back for the next two tries of the half firstly through Mitchell Aubusson then after Video Referee review Mitchell Pearce was awarded a try to take the score to 12-10 at the break.
The first half saw the Roosters with most of the attacking position but really couldn’t put it together to trouble the defence. This was a similar case to the second half when the Titans were under all sorts of defensive pressure but the Roosters couldn’t turn it into points.
The first points of the second half came from Anthony Don who raced 70m off a lovely pass from Brad Takairangi to race down field to extend the lead out to 8 points.
Over the next 15 minutes the Roosters managed to cross the line three times, however the first one was ruled No Try by Video Referee Jason Robinson for a knock on, then scored through Daniel Tupou then soon after they scored again through Sam Moa.
From that point it looked like the Roosters had all the momentum and it looked likely that they were likely to run over the top of the Titans who looked to be gone. However the Titans never gave up and managed to score through Brad Takairangi to take the score back to 28-22.
The Roosters then had seven minutes to score and as the full time siren approached the Roosters tried to through the ball around after the siren only for it to land in the hands of Dave Taylor who scored under the posts to win the match by 30-22.
Next weekend, the Roosters have their toughest task taking on the Rabbitohs in the battle for the minor premiership, meanwhile the Titans have the unenviable task of playing the Storm down at AAMI Park.
