Jamie Lyon has inspired the Manly Sea Eagles to a come-from-behind 22-20 victory in front of 27,527 fans at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane, reversing the recent run of losses for the defending Premiers.
The Broncos started the match strongly and had quickly opened up a 16-0 lead by the 26th minute thanks to some sharp work out wide and some pretty flimsy Manly defence. Jamie Lyon managed to score before halftime but it looked like nothing more than token resistance against the might of the home side, who were unlucky not to score once more before the break when a tough forward pass call rubbed out the opportunity.
Whatever Des Hasler said at the break obviously had the right effect as a completely different Sea Eagles team emerged from the sheds for the second half. Lyon grabbed his second try with a dash of controversy after the video referee ruled the ball had been forced by his torso, then winger Michael Bani crossed in the 51st minute to level the scores. Both teams then settled into an arm-wrestle for the next 20 minutes before the Sea Eagles found another gear against a Broncos side that looked to have hit the wall.
