Scotland A coach Kevin Rudd has kept faith with the squad that went close to beating England, for the clash with Wales A at Hamilton RFC on Saturday 3 July. Scotland must beat the holders to have any chance of lifting the Parkhouse Recruitment Four Nations Cup for the first time.
That means places in the squad for three players from RL Conference side Liverpool Buccaneers skipper Ash Carroll, prop Jon Fitt and wide man Mark Webster from Thatto Heath while 16-year old Callum Anderson from Peebles High School, whose brother David is also in the squad, retains his place after becoming the youngster ever open age international for Scotland when he played against England.
The other three debutants Andy Gray and Andy McPhail from Glasgow Bulls and Edinburghs Mike Wallace all remain, as do the uncapped trio from Fife Lions: back rower Jamie Symes, half-back James Smith and Canberra-born, Glasgow-bred winger Andy Brown.
Scotland showed enough passion and ability in their agonising 28-26 defeat by the England Lionhearts at Hamilton on June 13 to convince Rudd that they should be given further opportunities.
The England game came very early in the season for our lads, some of whom had only played one or two League matches, said Rudd, the former Castleford Tigers junior. Consequently, at times the level of concentration for a high intensity rugby league game was not always there. But the guys are looking forward to the clash with last years champions and will look to improve on the English performance which was solid but contained too many errors. Well have to step up another gear to gain their first win over Wales A.
Wales beat Ireland 56-12 in the opening game of the tournament in Cardiff last month. Scotland complete their championship programme in Dublin against Ireland on August 15.
