North Queensland held on for a good win 21-14 over Easts at Langlands Park in the ABC Television clash. After a scrappy start by both teams it was Young Guns hooker and captain Paul Dezolt who darted over from dummy half to open the scoring. A few minutes later big centre Luke Cross crashed over for a try and then side-stepping run by five eight Michael Meigan led to a try to fullback Daniel Sorbello for a 16-0 advantage after 21 minutes.
A 40-20 kick from Tigers five eight Scott Thorburn saw fullback Wade Liddell notch a try and reduce the margin to 16-6 after thirty minutes. A strong try to replacement forward Jason Wrigley had the Tigers back in the game at 16-12 and when Thorburn added a penalty goal the score was 16-14 at half-time. A try to winger Jude Wheeler early in the second half extended the Young Guns lead to 20-14 with Meigan slotting a field goal with seven minutes remaining to seal the win after a see-sawing tussle. Dezolt was awarded the QRL man of the match.
Burleigh led Redcliffe 18-6 at one stage in the clash at Pizzey Park before the Premiers stormed home to post an impressive 22-18 win. Tries to Bears captain Adam Hayden, hooker Ryan Gundry and Damien Driscoll had the hosts in a handy position. The Dolphins halves Shane Perry and Michael Roberts were creating havoc for the big Burleigh pack, both also notching tries, and two late tries to diminutive flyer Aaron Barba snatched the win.
Souths Logan were again impressive in the first half leading Wynnum 12-10 at half-time in the match at Kougari Oval, before the Seagulls ran away to win 44-18 and maintain their undefeated start to the season. The Seagulls posted seven tries in the second term dominating the Magpies and delighting the parochial home crowd. Wynnum five eight Damien Quinn crossed for a double with winger Jason Hynes scoring a try and kicking three goals for Souths Logan.
