Gordon named Sharks best
Sharks fullback Michael Gordon has beaten off the challenge of a number of worthy contenders in being named the Monty Porter Medalist and Pontifex Sharks Player of the Year at the club’s annual presentation night held at Sharkies Leagues Club.
Gordon was outstanding at the back for the Sharks, safe under the high ball and always dangerous with football in hand, adding an extra dimension to the team in 2013.
In further confirmation of his brilliant season, his teammates agreed with the assessment of the coaching staff in also naming Gordon as their Player’s Player.
In claiming the two major awards on the night Gordon beat out Player of the Year nominees Paul Gallen and Todd Carney, with the pair also instrumental in the success of the Sharks throughout the 2013 season.
Andrew Fifita, named Dally M Prop of the Year just last night, was voted by Sharks members as the 2013 Members Player of the Year, his award coming after a season which saw him star not only for the Cronulla club but also for NSW in three State of Origin appearances.
The Sharks Rookie of the Year for 2013 was Sosaia Feki, with the young winger a revelation once elevated to the top grade, playing in 19 consecutive matches after debuting at Hunter Stadium in Newcastle back in round 8.
Other award recipients on the night included Ben Ross, in recognition of his tireless work in the community as the winner of the 2013 Sharks Support Community Award, with the Career Smart Award, sponsored by Dynamic Learning Services going to retiring front rower Jon Green.
In the NSW Cup it was Tyrone Peachey who accepted the top accolade as Reozone Player of the Year, with Chad Townsend accepting the Reozone Coaches Award from Tony Herman. The NSW Cup Sharks play in the Grand Final against the Windsor Wolves this Sunday.
In the Holden Cup under 20’s, local junior Michael Morris claimed both Player of the Year and the NYC Players’ Player after a remarkably consistent season.
From the Engadine Dragons, testimony to Morris’s work ethic was the fact that he ranked second in the entire NYC for total tackles.
