A Rockhampton Leagues Club Comets White side made up of QLD Cup squad players and QR Development Squad players were too strong for Mackay Souths Sharks A-grade defeating them 34-18 at Browne Park on Saturday, February 12 in round two of the Minniecon & Burke Comets Pre-Season Challenge.
Led by former Canberra Raider Premier League half back Mark Henry, Comets White come out with all guns blazing and raced to an 18-nil lead after just 15 minutes.
A try to Henry, a blockbusting try from John Bidgood and a great long distance try from winger Clint Wallace seen the Comets well and truly on top.
Centre Ricky Fuller converted all three tries from different positions on the field and just when it looked like being a long night for the Sharks Salla Feteo scored.
Sharks centre Isaac Fewquandie converted the try and the Sharks trailed 18-6 after 20 minutes.
Comets White hit back shortly after though with Cowboys Scholarship holder Trent McKinlay going over for a try.
Moments later centre Fuller went over for a great try but injured himself in the process, smashing his leg up against the left up right.
Henry converted and Comets White led 28-6 at the main break.
In the second half Comets White took Henry, McKinlay, prop Damian Wilkes, second rower John Bidgood, fullback Clint Rothery and half Mitch Wyatte from the field as they had been selected to play later in the night against the Cowboys in the main game.
QR Comets Development Squad members including Tyron Haynes and Chris Conway filled in for the Comets White side in the second half and did well after backing up from their previous game.
Haynes in particular was very good scoring a great long distance try after half time capping off a four try night for the utility.
Centre Chris Conway kicked the goal to convert his side's only try in the second half.
Comets White lead 34-6 with 25 minutes on the clock and the Sharks needed a miracle but it didn't come.
The Sharks scored late courtesy of Danny Boyle and Stu Cruishank and the tries were converted by Fewquandie and half Adam Wright but it was a case of too little too late for the Sharks with Comets White running out 34-18 winners.
An entertaining clash with plenty of great defence, the QR Development Squad players who backed up rate a mention for a tremendous effort.
Henry, McKinlay, Wilkes, Bidgood, Rothery and Wyatte all thoroughly deserved their call ups to the top squad. Wilkes and Bidgood in particular were very strong in the forwards while halves Henry and Wyatte were great in the halves.
The kicking game in particular of Wyatte was a talking point with the QR Development Squad product producing some great long kicks on the final tackle.
