Brisbane Broncos 25 v Canterbury Bulldogs 6
at Suncorp Stadium
Referees: Steven Clark
The Broncos have kept their good record after origin games intact with a 25 points to 6 thrashing to arch rivals the Bulldogs.
Normally close games between the clubs, this one was a mismatch as the home side led from start to finish to take the two compettion points.
Brisbane got off to a great start as they jumped to a 12-0 lead early on the back of tries to Tupou, Berrigan and Boyd in the first fifteen minutes of the contest.
The home side opened the scoring in just the third minute of action as Kiwi winger Tame Tupou finished off a picturesque back line movement that involved two second man plays.
As if things couldnt get worse for the visitors, less than five minutes later, the Broncos were in again this time on the blind side as fullback Karmichael Hunt threw a short pass on to the chest of centre Shaun Berrigan who crashed over.
With the next try to young star Darius Boyd, the Bulldogs were looking down the barrel of a heavy defeat after only fifteen minutes as the score line read 12-0. The only thing that was keeping the doggies in the contest was Corey Parkers wayward goalkicking. In the first half the visitors struggled to keep possession of the ball as the held it for only just over 50%.
However, in the second half we saw a much bigger improvement with the Bulldogs scoring the first try of the half as five-eighth Daniel Holdsworth delivered a miracle flick pass to utility Reni Maitua to crash over next to the posts. This was converted to get the Doggies back within two converted tries.
The hopes of the Canterbury side were soon dashed when Tupou grabbed a double and doing well to stay infield as he dived over to score in the corner. Parker then kicked his first of the night from the sideline to give the Broncos a 24-6 lead.
The icing on the cake was performed fifteen minutes from time as a Darren Lockyer field goal put the contest beyond doubt.
This loss to the Bulldogs really questions their Top 4 credentials however the Broncos take a vital 2 points during the origin period.
