Sea Eagles pluck victory from jaws of defeat

The Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles have pulled off a remarkable feat and all but secured the 2014 NRL Minor Premiership with a come from behind victory, 26-25 over the Penrith Panthers at Brookvale Oval.

The 18,654 strong crowd were left in jubilant adulation as the Sea Eagles fought back after trailing 22-6.

Nigel Plum has avoided the nudie run as he posted his first try of the season in the 6th minute of play. Kierran Moseley was impressive with the game time played in his NRL debut. His touches and speed led to the Plum try.

Josh Mansour had moments to forget with a few costly errors. However, he finished off a left side raid crafted by Matt Moylan. Penrith just behind the clock, 10-0 after 12 minutes.

Jamie Buhrer sliced through the line as he guided his way through the Panthers pack courtesy of a darting run from Kieran Foran. Manly closed the gap to 10-6 approaching the mid-way point of the first half.

Intercepts were the name of the game as Jamal Idris was gifted a four-pointer by Jamie Lyon in the 27th minute. Idris sailed away to ink up the 16-6 lead heading into the break.

Jamie Soward attempted to ice the first half with a field goal on the siren but it just faded from the uprights.

Following the play of the first half, another intercept pass led to Penrith racing away for further points. Jamie Soward plucked a long pass from a scrum play and bolted 80 metres untouched as he fired up the after burners. Penrith extended their lead to 22-6 after 45 minutes.

Tom Symonds was rewarded for his efforts as he collected two tries, one of which won the game for the home side. His first came at 54th minute as Jamie Lyon provided the foundation to cross in the next to the posts. Manly closed the gap to 10 points, 22-12.

Soward opted to extend his side's lead to two converted tries with a penalty goal at the mid-point of the second half, Panthers 24-12.

The Sea Eagles started their fight back and would go on to score three tries which broke the hearts of Penrith supporters as they looked to cement their spot in the top 4.

James Hasson sailed away via a Brett Stewart linking play as Manly cracked the Panthers right hand defence. Manly just 6 points behind as a quarter of the game remained.

Matt Moylan has made a name for himself as ‘The Closer' with several field goal attempts securing Panthers victories in 2014. His magic boot again in play as he gave the Panthers a 7 point lead with just as many minutes on the clock.

Jamie Lyon and Tom Symonds closed out the game for the Sea Eagles which brought the Sea Eagles' faithful to their feet in the final three minutes. It was a game for the ages as Manly claimed victory 26-25.

Steve Matai and Adam Docker will have a trip to the NRL Judiciary with a shoulder (37th minute) and dangerous tackle (43rd minute) charges respectively.

The Sea Eagles will close out the regular season with a trip to North Queensland next Saturday night against the Cowboys. Meanwhile Penrith look to regroup against the Warriors at Sportingbet Stadium next Sunday night.
