Gareth Widdop - Injury Update

Melbourne Storm can confirm five-eighth Gareth Widdop has dislocated his right hip, making it unlikely he will play NRL again in 2013.

Widdop, who was discharged from hospital this morning, sustained the injury in the second half of last night’s match against the Titans at Skilled Park.

Scans have cleared Widdop of structural injury however he has suffered some cartilage damage, the full extent of which won’t be determined until next week.

Widdop will remain on the Gold Coast with his teammates until Thursday as the squad prepares for the match against Wests Tigers on Saturday.

Melbourne Storm GM Football Frank Ponissi said the players and staff are all extremely disappointed for Widdop.

“We are all feeling for Gareth. As well as being one of our key players in our team, he is one of the most popular players at the club and it is devastating for him to have suffered this injury,” Ponissi said.

“Gareth will remain an important part of our squad, the players have all rallied around him and the club will fully support him as his begins his recovery.”

Widdop also thanked everyone who had contacted him since last night’s match.

“I’m obviously disappointed with the injury. I want to thank the Storm fans, opposition clubs and players who have contacted me to wish me well,” Widdop said.

“I’m in great hands with the staff at Melbourne Storm and I’ll be working hard to return to the footy field.”
