Rabbitohs v Dragons preview

South Sydney Rabbitohs v St. George Illawarra Dragons
ANZ Stadium - Monday 7:00pm

Will the Rabbitohs break their losing run against the in-form Dragons.

After a spectacular start to 2015, the Rabbitohs have been brought right down from the height of last year's premiership. Three straight loses without halfback Adam Reynolds has been met with instability in the halves with Luke Keary being paired with multiple five-eighths throughout the string of losses. With former captain John Sutton returning from injury after last playing in Round 2, coach Michael Maguire will be hoping his side can find the right balance against the Dragons. After suffering a hand injury against the Raiders, former Manly second rower Glenn Stewart has been replaced by Tom Burgess, who will start for only the fifth time in his career.

At the start of 2015, few expected the Dragons to challenge for the top eight, let alone be leading the competition. Stringing together six consecutive wins, the Dragons have displayed tremendous defence, conceding an average of eight points per game during the winning run. With Josh Dugan sustaining a leg injury during last week's Test match, the talented Peter Mata'utia will move to fullback, enabling Fijian international Eto Nabuli back into the side after missing the bizarre ANZAC Day win over the Roosters. Ben Creagh will once again captain the side off the bench in order to accommodate the back row of Tyson Frizell, Joel Thompson and Trent Merrin, all of whom played representative football last weekend and have been touted as potential New South Wales players in the upcoming Origin series.

Last meeting: Round 12 2014 - South Sydney Rabbitohs 29 St. George Illawarra Dragons 10

Who to watch: After playing for Australia in the 2014 Four Nations, Dylan Walker started this year in spectacular form, crossing for four tries in three games before a series of injuries forced him out of the Rabbitohs line-up. At his best, Walker has the potential to rival Greg Inglis as South Sydney's main attacking weapon. Should the Dragons be unable to maintain their defence for the entire 80 minutes, look for Walker to target the inexperience of Euan Aitken and Eto Nabuli in order to come up with the points required to break the Rabbitohs losing streak.

While he only managed six games last year, Dylan Farrell has been impressive for the Dragons so far this in 2015. Averaging over 100 metres a game along with 24 tackles, the former Rabbitoh will be looking to show off his attacking prowess against the reigning premiers on Monday night. Having only scored once in the past 18 months of football, Farrell will be looking to benefit from Benji Marshall's form as the former Tiger marks a year since returning from his failed stint in New Zealand Rugby Union.

The favourite: While the Rabbitohs have dominated recent meetings, winning six of the past seven encounters, surprisingly they have been backed as favourites despite the contrasting form lines of each club.

My tip: While the Rabbitohs will undoubtedly improve after succumbing to the Raiders late, the momentum of the Dragons should be too strong. Dragons by 7.
