Raiders run riot over Rabbitohs

The Canberra Raiders have turned on an impressive second half display to comprehensively demolish the South Sydney Rabbitohs 34 points to 18 at ANZ Stadium tonight. A dominant forwards display that constantly had the Rabbitohs on the back foot laid the platform as the Raiders built on their slim 16-14 half time lead and blew it right open. Not only were the forwards laying the platform, they were also putting on the finishing touches, with all of the Raiders three second half tries scored by forwards. Big Dane Tilse lumbered over in the 48th after the Raiders spread the ball wide on the last out to Bronson Harrison in the centres, who cut back inside and found Tilse backing up. The Raiders turned on the razzle dazzle in the 60th, keeping the ball alive through eight sets of hands before Nigel Plum went agonisingly close to scoring. Spreading the ball on the next play, Tilse this time found himself providing the offload for Tom Learoyd Lahrs to cross for a four pointer. Twelve minutes later, and Plum had the try that he almost grabbed earlier. Fetuli Talanoa bagged the second of his tries just minutes out from full time in the only second half highlight for the Rabbitohs in a game that had promised to be much closer at half time. The Raiders started off the scoring tonight with a dubious try to Joel Monaghan in the 5th minute. The try was sent up to Phil Cooley to check on the grounding but, as video evidence proved inconclusive, was sent back down to Ashley Klein who had no hesitation in awarding the try. Following a penalty on the restart set, the Raiders were in again, this time through fullback David Milne, who ran a lovely line off Marc Herberts shoulder to extend the lead out to ten. Souths kicked the next restart out on the full, and things were looking bleak, until Learoyd Lahrs spilt the pill and Baeu Champion raced 40 metres to give Souths their best field position of the match. Following a repeat set, the Bunnies worked over the Raiders left side defence, with Luke Capewell finding his way over for the Rabbitohs opening try. The scoreboard attendant wasn't troubled again until the 30th minute, with Nathan Merritt flew high over Jared Croker to square the game up. Both teams traded tries in the minutes leading up to half time, first to the Raiders through Herbert, then Talanoa for the Rabbitohs, to give us out 16-14 half time score and build up to what seemingly would be an arm wrestle of a second half. As it turns out, Souths arm snapped before the wrestle even began under the sheer might of the Canberra Raiders, who did it all without their main man Terry Campese.

South Sydney won the toss, and will kickoff in just a few moments time. 0 min: And we're underway! 2 min: McCrone kicks a 40/20 from inches inside his 40. Capewell didn't really show enough urgency to try and keep the ball in play. 4 min: Herbert kicks across to the corner, where Talanoa knocks it dead under heavy pressure from Monaghan. Repeat set coming up here for the Raiders. 5 min: VIDEO REF - Possible Raiders Try...: Possible try to Monaghan in the corner, just checking grounding. 5 min: TRY Canberra Raiders Video Ref Phil Cooley can't make a decision, so hands it back down to Ashley Klein who awards the try to Monaghan. Conversion attempt by Marc Herbert successful. Canberra Raiders 10-0 10 min: Now Souths have kicked the restart out on the full. Can the Raiders go back-to-back-to-back? 11 min: No they can't, as Learoyd-Lars losed control of the ball and it's swooped upon by Champion who goes on a 40 metre dart downfield before being caught from behind. 12 min: Sandows grubber to the in-goal is cleaned up by Croker, and the Rabbitohs will get another crack. 12 min: TRY South Sydney Rabbitohs Following the drop-out, the Bunnies work their way to the Raiders left-side defence again, this time finding their way over through Capewell. Conversion attempt by Chris Sandow unsuccessful. Conversion attempt by Issac Luke successful. 10 all 33 min: TRY Canberra Raiders A lovely interchange of short passes in the middle of the field puts Milne through a huge hole, finding Herbert in support for the try under the posts. Conversion attempt by Issac Luke unsuccessful. Canberra Raiders 16-14 HALF TIME It's half time here at ANZ, with the Raiders carrying a slim 16-14 lead into the break, in a game that has very much been tit-for-tat. It's been a tight tussle, and neither team can claim to have the upper hand. This is one game that looks like it will go down to the wire, or may even end up with the second draw in as many weeks. 40 min: And we're back underway! 43 min: A big hit on Thurling by Champion forces the ball loose, but the refs call it a knock on against the Bunnies and the Raiders will have it back just inside Souths half. 45 min: A shocking kick from McCrone is gobbled up by Sandow who hits a hole, then finds Merritt at full steam on the outside, who runs for 60 metres before being run down by McCrone. Souths then find the Raiders offside, and get themselves a full set of six inside the Raiders red zone. 48 min: TRY Canberra Raiders The Raiders spread the ball on the last out to Harrison, who cuts back in and lobs the ball over to Tilse who lumbers over for a rare four pointer. Conversion attempt by Marc Herbert successful. Canberra Raiders 22-14 53 min: Penalty against McCrone for an accidental obstruction play will give the Bunnies a reprieve as the Raiders have had all the field position since they scored their last try. 55 min: Merritt taps back the last tackle cross-field kick to Capewell, who, in the process of being bundled into touch, gets the ball back to Merritt, who, under similar pressure, puts boot to ball and fires it straight into touch judge David Abood, narrowly missing his crown jewels. 60 min: TRY Canberra Raiders Razzle dazzle stuff from the Raiders, who in a thirty metre gain on the 4th feed the ball through about eight sets of hands and almost result in a try to Plum. They spread the ball on the last, and Tilse bullocks towards a second, before being held up short and offloading for Lahrs who crashes over for the try that may just wrap this game up for the Raiders. Conversion attempt by Marc Herbert successful. Canberra Raiders 28-14 65 min: Learoyd Lahrs makes a half break and offloads to Croker who drops the ball cold but had he caught it was short odds to race 50 metres to further extend the lead. 68 min: Rabbitohs get a penalty for a strip, and will have a full set inside the Raiders 20. If they're to make a comeback, they need a result from this set. 69 min: Luke delivers a hospital pass for Asotasi, who is absolutely hammered by Learoyd Lahrs as soon as he gets the ball. 71 min: Champion loses control of the ball getting up to play it, and the Raiders are home and hosed. 72 min: TRY Canberra Raiders Plum dives over from three metres out, and hammers down the final nail in the coffin that Souths were wheeled out in after half time. Conversion attempt by Marc Herbert successful. Canberra Raiders 34-14 76 min: TRY South Sydney Rabbitohs Talanoa collects his second but it's all too little, too late for the Bunnies. Conversion attempt by Issac Luke unsuccessful. Canberra Raiders 34-18 FULL TIME It's full time here and in a dominant second half display the Canberra Raiders have run riot over the South Sydney Rabbitohs, running out 34-18 victors.

- June 2nd, 2009 9:54amSutton was ordinary, its no wonder he isnt playing origin. Issac Luke was worse. Your international forwards didnt do anything and Chris "speedbump" sandow again had a poor game. In contrast Tilse, Miller and Leahroyd Lars steamrolled the souths line every time, whilst McCrone and Herbert proved they were the two best halves on the field by miles with dominant kicking and passing. End result is the bunnies should thank their lucky stars the scoreline wasnt any worse.

- June 2nd, 2009 2:24amYou's clearly have no idea. Sutton was brilliant. Four Try Assists and Two Line Break Assists. He was easily the best on the field, Best game I have seen him play ever.

- June 2nd, 2009 12:26pmDoes Four Try Assists and Two Line Break Assists get into your head much?, His passing game was spot on in the attacking 20 and barely made a mistake, his short kicking game was strong too
