Bears Dominate Penrith In Mid Week Win

North Sydney have returned to the top eight in a ferocious up front attack on 2nd placed Penrith in their VB Premier League match played on a fearsomely cold Wednesday night. “I’ve book all remaining home matches for Wednesday night” quipped a happy General Manager Greg Florimo, after a fearsome display at Bear Park that brought to the fore some gritty performances from Norths and Souths contracted players alike. Barging their way up the middle the Bears piled on 34 unanswered points before allowing the Panthers to score in the last 8 minutes. The first 15 minutes of play set the scene as Isaac Gordon opened the scoring for the Bears with a 4 pointer in the corner. Even as Penrith mounted an attack Joe Williams and Jardine Bobongie were there to block a possible corner try. The Bears forward pack began to open up the field for the Williams-Champion-Irvine tirade to work their magic, as Isaac Gordon continued to be a handful for the Panthers defence. After some sparkling work by fullback Reece Simmonds, Isaac hit the chalk line again for Joe Williams to convert, hitting the half time sheds 10-0 in front. After thawing out at halftime the Bears returned with even more grizzle with the Red & Black backline and forward pack combining to run rampant over the frozen Panthers. Scott Geddes got Beau Champion off the mark to score after a strong run. Beau Champion then got a sweet ball off to Reece Simmonds to score. And good work from Yileen Gordon and Jardine Bobongie sent Troy Boston to the right hand corner for his first try. Joe Williams kicked two conversions and a penalty goal to give Norths a 28-nil lead in the 60th minute. Then a preview of what’s yet to come from the talented winger saw Troy Boston get to the ball on the right side of the field mid play and race 80m down and across field, outdistancing the defence to score in the left corner. Norths maintained their 34-nil lead only allowing the Panthers in the last 10 minutes of the match to score 16 points. “We got the big fellas out there to run up the middle, get in there play the ball and move on” said coach Wayne Lambkin who has over seen a succession of strong performances form his team. Both Conrad Ta’akimoeaka and Joe Falemaka hit well above their size and with ball in hand Ryan Verlinden was hard for the Panthers to contain. The ‘footballers’ footballer’ Jardine Bobongie, continues to push for an NRL spot, working in well with the backline as did Scott Geddes despite playing injured. Joe Williams continues to shine for the Bears as did Try Boston and Isaac Gordon. And Bladen Baird and Dave Wynyard made an impact off the bench. NORTH SYDNEY 34 (Isaac Gordon 2, Beau Champion, Reece Simmonds, Troy Boston 2, Joe Williams 5 goals from 6) defeated PENRITH 16 (3 tries, 2 goals) Half time North Sydney 10-0. In form winger Mohammed Alhaje has scored all the points for the Bears in their Jersey Flegg match against Manly also at North Sydney Oval on Wednesday night. Mohammed scored early for his team after combining with Kieran Croft. Manly then scored a converted try but Mohammed leveled the scores with a penalty kick in time for the break 6 all. In the second half Mohammed kicked two more penalty goals to lead 10-6. However Manly were able to score and convert late to take the match 12-10. Olly Tiatia, Tim McDonald, Brad Lupi and Martin Field made a lot of yards for their team and Mohammed Alhaje, Brent Millar, Brett Smith and Kieran Croft put on some good combinations. MANLY 12 (2 tries, 2 goals) defeated NORTH SYDNEY 10 (Mohammed Alhaje try, 3 goals from 4) Half time 6-6. After their wins against Canberra and Penrith the North Sydney Premier League will be looking for 3 from 3 in the space of a week when they take on Parramatta at North Sydney oval this Saturday.
